Okay then...First of all, I'm glad that one of my random ideas has had such a good reception.
What I had in mind is something like this:
I thought it might be a good idea to start with the UK, 'cos it would be easier to do. What I thought is that we would have a map of the UK with just major cities on it, split into around 30 regions (counties?) which you could zoom in onto. It would then show towns and cities in that area, then you could zoom in further onto one city or several towns, be able to zoom into your general area, then another zoom for your local area.
you could then have a map of the country in a solid colour with dots showing where people are, but no more detail, then zooming in and so on and so forth. Obviously, there would then be the possibility of refining the whole thing to do world maps, or doing searches on people in your area, that sort of thing, if somebody wanted to bother with it but in its crudest form, it would give a good idea of where everybody is located. Any thoughts anyone?

I'd just like to add...That I'd love to try to do something like this myself, but I don't have the kind of access to a dedicated server or knowledge of anything other than CGI written in PERL to make it work. I'm thinking that that would be a rather inefficient way of making it work.
