I've had an idea(watch out!)
...but I have neither the talent nor the knowledge to make it work...
Goes something like this - It would be great if B3tans from all over the country/world could meet up for drinks an' stuff. The problem is though, that nobody knows where anybody else lives, which makes it kinda hard to organise.
So here's my idea - I'm guessing most people here are in the UK, so we have a map of the UK, which you can zoom in on to find the place where you live (4 or 5 levels of zoom would probably do it). You click on where you are and then you get put in a database somewhere. Then anybody can see where yuo are and we could build up a map of people. This could be linked to peoples profiles or something, so there would be a little map on a persons profile showing whereabouts in the country they are.
I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be too hard to program for someone who has a decent server and a little database space. I'm thinking that all you would need to store would be a persons coordinates and name and write a few scripts to stick dots on maps and stuff like that.
But as I said, I have neither the knowledge or the talent (or a webserver).
Any takers?

If
Anyone does it... can I have a copy
for My Jam-Locator site , the absense of scripting knowlegde kind of stuffs it for me! -
I want to find the highest Jam density per head of Population in The UK... I have a theory, I want to prove it.

If someone wants to send me a large
bitmap (hires with detail) of the UK then I'll have a bash. can't promise anything, mind.

I'll re-phrase that
'point me in the direction of' rather than 'send me' might be a better phrase.

Might it be an idea
to have a general world map too? It's not exclusively UK people, although obviously that is the vast majority.

that's a good idea
but i'm thinking of mixing in flibz's pub locator idea too somehow. if the uk one works, maybe an international alternative could be bolted on.

I can vouch
that this is chimpy's kind of thing. I feel you have a very real chance of getting it working.
I'd like it to work internationally, even if it's not at such a grand scale, just dots on maps, it'd be cool if we could have synchronised b3ta bashes in London, Edinburgh, Berlin and New York, for example. Or even just facilitate drinking buddy finding globally.

Okay then...
First of all, I'm glad that one of my random ideas has had such a good reception.
What I had in mind is something like this:
I thought it might be a good idea to start with the UK, 'cos it would be easier to do. What I thought is that we would have a map of the UK with just major cities on it, split into around 30 regions (counties?) which you could zoom in onto. It would then show towns and cities in that area, then you could zoom in further onto one city or several towns, be able to zoom into your general area, then another zoom for your local area.
you could then have a map of the country in a solid colour with dots showing where people are, but no more detail, then zooming in and so on and so forth. Obviously, there would then be the possibility of refining the whole thing to do world maps, or doing searches on people in your area, that sort of thing, if somebody wanted to bother with it but in its crudest form, it would give a good idea of where everybody is located. Any thoughts anyone?

I'd just like to add...
That I'd love to try to do something like this myself, but I don't have the kind of access to a dedicated server or knowledge of anything other than CGI written in PERL to make it work. I'm thinking that that would be a rather inefficient way of making it work.
