
i agree he was unstable and probably prone to balls it up at some point once in power.
but in terms of the populace being beaten already, they were surely then receptive to ideas that lots of people tried to sway them on, not just his, yet he was the one who won their support. there was probably a bit of luck there, yes, and it needed a desperate population in the first place to countenance such 'out there' ideas, but i think he was more successful in taking advantage of people than almost anyone else would have been in the same situation
