the mouse port isn't wired to take a keyboard - for some reason a lot of manufacturers think it cute to make them device-specific by leaving a wire off here and there, despite the fact they should work the same was as USBs.
Bastards.

Bastards.

when ours buggered up that wouldn't work for us, our techy friend laughed at us for trying to plug a keyboard into it, but we thought it made sense. Because this pc is ancient we had to get an adaptor thing.

keyboard can be emulated with a mouse, and so long as you don't have a thesis to write or a Doom tournament to win you can get by easily enough.
But mouse emulation ALWAYS sucks, always.
Have you considered obtaining a USB peripheral or 2?

i have got an old comp with ps2 ports that work, i might see if i can fiddle that one and see, it'll mean installing stuff so i can see this weekend being a big techy one.
thanks for the idea though, a usb keyboard would be a workaround.
