Create your gif on a background close towhat you think will be the background image or your page.
Before exporting choose 'index transparency' in your transparency settings and use the eyedropper to select the background. If you preview, you should see that one color is now 'cut out' of the image. Export. It may be somewhat different in different image editors, but that's the basics.
