i took photos, and found they were asian paper wasps, introduced to NZ in 1979 iirc

unless the other bees all crowd around it and vibrate until they cook the big one in the middle? Because those bees are amazing! Yay science!

these ones just fly around, and look weird. unaggressive unless you throw stones at the nest or rape their babies.
been alot of them around summer just gone.
