are plenty of other places you can go apart from BT now.
Now that I think about it thats the reason I didnt go for it before - bloody bastard BT. They have opened up their exchnages to other companies and the new boss of BT has made it his target to get at least a million people on ADSL by next summer.
Check out www.eclispe.co.uk/ - they do it for £50 startup, buy the modem yourself for about £50(all the new companies incur about a hundred quid startup fee in various different ways) and then pay £22.75 a month with no contract. Plus you get a batch of 6 static IP's.
Now - I work for ZDNet UK and we have shit hot internet access here at work as do a lot of offices. The server admin geeks have all just managed to swing ADSL out of the company and they are raving about this eclipse package. They reckon it's much MUCH faster than the access they get at work. So it must be good.

Best place to take a look over all your options is ADSL Clicky Guide
Personally, I'm going for the pipex deal - you buy your own modem and install it yourself, so you need to know 'arf a thing about pooters, but other'n that, it's one of the better ones around...
