i just want a camera that'll focus on the image im trying to focus on instead of the thing behind it... for example petals on a flower and it takes picture of the plant pot - pfft

just about any digital will do that
these days. Be sure to get one that has spot metering and you are laughing. No need to spend a fortune for that.
I'd still get a Nikon.

the reason i'm looking at canon is the fact i have some ef or fd (i forget) lesnses from my dads 35mm days
and with an adapater you can use the old lesnses (canon did make these back in the day apparently but when i asked they denied it)
