the sailor picture was at full opacity and then the writing (incidently an extract from Einstein's last written work) was at the low opacity - i can't remember what level, somewhere around 40

Seriously though, if you take a look at a graphics app like photoshop or GIMP there will be an option pretty close to hand to lower the opacity of a layer.
