tj: just fired up photoshop and whenever I make a selection it deletes the edges when I try to move/copy it. Just some obvious setting I have to change of course, I'm just not too great with ps so I'm absolutely clueless.

up in the tool bar, is there a number next to the word "Feather"?

if so, quickly change to zero and i believe your predicament will be solved.
