I also know someone who plays left-handed, but with a righthanded guitar upside down (strung righthanded). Uses really wierd chord shapes.

simply because the people I started playing with all played right handed, and left handed guitars were not as easy to find.

I started with classical so I wasn't allowed

Interestingly enough, Jimi Hendrix's grandfather had a lefthanded guitar and that's what Jimi learnt no. So it's actually a common misconception that he was lefthanded.
