that they do have gays in Iran, but not quite so many as, say, in America.

I think
the South America comment was most likely made because of the laughter/heckling he got from the Columbia University students when he said it over here. Probably trying a little 'spin control'.
And yes, they arent 'out' but they exist. Its not something that doesnt happen in different cultures, its just an issue as to how they treat it...and Iran, since the Imam's took control is very intolerant of anything.
