Perhapsasillyedit: Don't you always own the rights to a domain until you sell it though?
I thought it was just hosting that you paid for, and domains were just a one off?
I'm not exactly a veteran to web hosting so I may be being silly though =[

and it has to be renewed every year, or you can pay for a few years in advance.
Provided you renew it in time, it is yours until you decide you don't want it any more. If you let it lapse, then anyone else can register it (although any popular domains that have lapsed tend to be scooped up by random advertisers)
