how do you get shadows like that? i always end up drawing them by hand with lots of fade and smudge and they never quite work out.

fill it with black, flip it with the transform tool and skew, and add some blur filters

There are Photoshop filter add-ons however your marvelous hard earned-wages can purchace, or chance upon..

in the end hand drawing seemed just as good.
i'll keep my eyes open for filters though, i'm sure my rapidshare account can stretch to that expense.
