is it just me?or does he play essentially the same character in all his movies? having said that so do a lot of other hollywood stars to be fair...

Yes.He plays an odd, boring, mumbly person. But then a lot of actors don't act. Look at Michael Caine, but not for too long because he'll probably tell you to "stop bloody staring", and "clear off".
