I agree that the songs have not all faired well enough to be held in such high regardbut you have to appreciate that they get bummed and played to death and they don't really resonate so very well today BUT I think music today would be very different if we hadn't had them AND if you get a couple of albums (mostly the later stuff) and listen to them through they're actually very very very good.
I also like Lennon's solo stuff, but find it so filled with hypocrisy that it fills me with rage
