
Ecto - outside (very rough translation)
plasm - something that is moulded or formed, so usually a slime of sorts
Ergo,
ecto plasm = outer slime
the word is normally used when describing the make up of cells, namely the out part of a cells cytoplasm (cyto = cell / plasm = something that is moulded or formed)
it was picked up by ghostbusters and the like and is now the unnofficial word used for slime found after freaky occurences, doesn't really apply with the smoke your character describes.
