This last bit, definitely.I find I get the most gut-based inspiration from doing things like taking a kids' pound-shop keyboard (pulled out of a skip) and plugging it into a bunch of guitar effects, then tweaking things. This worked best when the batteries in the keyboard were nearly dead, and the distortion stage was picking up Radio 4.
If I try to get the same sort of immediacy from a stack of very-nice-sounding-and-infinitely-adjustable synths / softsynths, there's just too much to mess with.
