It's stone plasterWhich is much tougher than plaster of paris. Still gives excellent detail reproduction (I'll have to smooth off my thumb-print before giving the item away) and takes about 30-40 mins to set. It can still be scratched, with difficulty. A good quality paint should keep it scuff-free.
Latex is doable. Although it would take a hell of a lot of the stuff to cast my danglies. Oh yeah.
