Yeah probably the best solution.I think they've done it so you've got to buy Fireworks if you want to do animations, bastards. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

There must be hundreds of free programsthat allow you to open a gif for editing then either save it as a psd or export all frames to layers.
That would take a minute then you can do all the rest in photoshop.
