I loved the old temple on the hillside in Nagasaki. That sentence alone tells you everything you need to know about how they think about a location and spiritual sense of continuity of existence, rather than the actual materials being important.

In China they seem to just bash everything down if it's in the way.

Yes, China seem to be realising that a cultural revolution turned out pretty bad for 21st Century Tourism. Now they're building lots of cheap imitation tourist attractions.
