but how, how, how on Gimp?
I've tried different colors & fonts but it all looks lost so seriously any hepl is appreciated.

Or if your version supports them get one of the faux layer sfx plugins

# Create your text layer
- (layers window) right-click text layer and choose "Alpha to selection"
- create a new layer under the text layer and make sure it's the active layer
- (main window) right-click and choose Select>Grow - enter 1 and click Ok
- fill the selection with colour
- (layers window) right-click text layer and choose "Merge down" (you won't be able to change the text after merging the layers)
