I'm not convinced that the soldiers in Stalingrad really were desperate for bibles...maybe they would have preferred more guns or food...
...and that her training at the HJ centre would have automatically cancelled any opportunity to become a teacher post-war.

Why they needed bibles?
Thin pages. They needed them as they were locked down in trenches for many many months - it's a nice place to have toilet paper (without which they got dysentery); and the bible finally served mankind in a meaningful way.
