I always think the (admittedly funny) silliness surrounding the band did a little disservice to the genuine loveliness of their music. I think Pete Steele's bluster and jokiness was a sort of sheepishness about his real creativity. It's all just farcically lugubrious to the point that I initially dismissed them as a joke act, but under the gothic rumbling there's a Brian Wilson-like ear for harmony, melody and arrangement. Those lovely descending lines that resolve into blissed-out choruses in "Haunted" are something else.
