What he was was a collaborator, like a whole bunch of other ukrainians with an axe to grind against the red army following the fun times of the holomodor (in her granddaddy's case they did steal his ancestral stately home and murder his family), or those who just liked a bit of rape and pillage and jew bbq, or those who wrongly bet on who they thought would be the winners. Sounds like grandpa was in all three camps.
