nobody really knows what areas they controlled or in many cases who controlled them for a good 200 years until things settled down and the winners emerged, so all those nice patchwork coloured areas on the map in England are fairly meaningless. They weren't big on records and hadn't established any administration. All we know was there was a lot of them about and they were taking over shit, while the locals got all survivalist and started burying gold and stocking up on bows.
