They manage to be relaxing while making heavy use of drums (well, percussive synth noises),
and being just a little bit ominous.

I keep hearing this 'ominous' or 'sinister' thing about BoC
but to me, it just sounds like hot summer days... glaring sunshine, deep blue skies, still air, too hot to do anything but just lie there... almost as if the heat is melting the sound causing that gorgeous analogue detuning/lfo effect.
