I read the whole damn thing back in the 1960s
and I couldn't remember even half of it by the time the movies came out - or was the script based on some other fantasy?

It was more true to the book than many movies.
Of course, some things had to be left out and certain things were changed, but all in all pretty faithful.
I just feel smarter when I read it and say "that's a word? Cool!"
