I disagree
the vast majority of footy players earn about the same as rugby players, it's only a tiny top percentile that earn megabucks - and even then it's justified because of the huge revenues generated by their employers (the teams).
Don't get me wrong, I'm not sticking up for the prima-donna behaviour of the few - just saying that if rugby was as popular, the revenues would be equally as high and so would the wages, and the superstar mentality would be sure to creep in... just as you get some Hollywood stars who are decent, down to earth people; and some that are like Tom Cruise.

S'all true - simple economist of supply and demand
It's why Rooney is paid shit loads and a nurse is not... as the song goes "there's only one Wayne Rooney" but there are a lot of nurses and even more people capable of doing the job. It is a saturated market - if not here, we can ship them in from abroad. The very top level of footballers though are a rare bread and generate a huge amount of money for their clubs.
It's just a shame they are such a bunch of utter fuckwits and nurses do an fundamentally important job with little thanks or pay.
I think a solution could be to withold a large percentage of their wages from them until they have retired from the game. At least they can then grow up a bit, be able to handle life a bit better, dedicate themselves to their profession without the draws of slappers and flash cars - and if it still goes wrong, they can have a break down in the privacy of their own lifes not while they are put on a pedastal as heroes and flogged by the press.
