I was in a commercial airliner when it did something akin to that.
Attempting to land in Chambery airport (tiny little place in the Alps that supports loads of ski areas), lot of cloud about, pilot said he would attempt a landing rather than divert to Nice. Gentle sense of descent, then all of a sudden the engines went crazy and the pilot stuck a 737 on its tail and got out of there.
I've no idea what he saw - probably something not unlike this. The stench of adrenaline and sweat in the cabin was palpable until we landed in Nice 40 minutes later.
