As I saw it
the David/drink bit was insinuating that David was waiting to see whether or not Holloway would act like a cock to him because he was a robot; he decided that Holloway was a cock, and deserved to have whatever the tainted drink might do to him. The sequence suggested to me (and I'm not saying I'm correct, it's just how I interpreted it) that David might have developed a "soul", because spiking the drink was so illogical it cannot/should not have been done by a robot.
