
I've been trying to explain the facts of this to people, as the vast majority of them feel that their knowing absolutely bugger-all should be no impediment to loudly proclaiming that the scientists performing this research do not know what they're doing.
Ethical issues aside, the response to comments like that is that the experiments have to be performed on young animals whose visual systems are still developing. If you were doing it to humans it would have to be done on young children.
