
I know its dodgy as f*ck to listen to peoples answer machine by using the default password but to describe it as "hacking" gives them too much credit. It's also impossible to believe that they were the only publication doing it.

Sounds like a type hacking to me. I don't see not using software to guess the password makes any difference

seriously, the username and password were qwerty and zxcvbn. Told my brother and my housemate about it - it continued to work for at least 2 years.
