His role is to be the guy that everyone attacks so that wikileaks can continue.
I don't understand why the average joe is angry about this.

For a long time he has adversely affected the credibility, neutrality and effectiveness of that organisation.
He should separate himself entirely from Wiki-leaks if he wants to do some good. I'm sure his friends at Russia Today will keep him stocked up with roubles?
