The make believe history was irrelevant.
The Dad knew he was a dead man.
But saying such blasphemy to an Italian mobster guaranteed a quick death rather than prolonged torture.

nah, I reckon he would have let him go.
He even says "before I do some damage you won't walk away from". There was an option to get out of it.
