This is a normal post It is essentially to register strength of public opinion in both cases.
For the US, it only demands a response from the White House, here it only demands a non-binding debate and then only from the petitions selected by the Backbench Business Committee.

They are useful in campaigning, but they aren't designed to be a form of participatory democracy really.
