were those atoms in that 8-bit style configuration in the first place or were they arranged to look like that? Because if it's the former I now totally believe that we're all just a computer construct like in The Matrix.

There's been work done to find out if there is a base resolution of the universe recently
Nothing conclusive so far but if there is it'll be far smaller than an atom which are massive compared to their component parts.
