"Terrapin" is not a well-defined termIt was invented by people who use the word turtle incorrectly, because they realised that they actually needed a word that meant the wet ones.
I have a musk turtle and two mississippi map turtles. The word "terrapin", you'll notice, does not appear in these species names.

That's because they're American species.If you're going to claim a turtle is a terrapin just because it comes from the US, then a tortoise is also a turtle.
