Halfway through an English lesson....sometime in the early eighties, around the time I was convinced nuclear war could break out at any moment, the town's air raid siren went off. I'd never heard it used before and had no idea that the council were merely testing it to make sure it still worked. What really, really didn't help was our teacher putting down her chalk and calmly turning to the terrified class to say,
"Okay, you have four minutes to gather your things."
