They don't take them RIGHT off and put them in a little jar.
They remain attached to - and by - nerves and blood vessels, and they just sort of hang around in the way until they're ready to be sewn back into position. I had to cover this during my degree, even though I read Journalism. The images I saw during the research stages never left me.
