I suspect that, before he became the Education Secretary, he tried to make a career as a teacher, but had failed miserably from the start when the Head would have bought him into a classroom and announced,
"Right, children, this is your new teacher, Mr Balls."

Someone in work with me used to have a teacher called Mr Woodcock
Or as he was known to the kids, Mr Timberdick. Quite a nice nickname if you're out on the pull, I suppose...
