This is a question I don't understand the attraction

Smaug says: Ricky Gervais. Lesbian pr0n. Going into a crowded bar, purely because it's crowded. All these things seem to be popular with everybody else, but I just can't work out why. What leaves you cold just as much as it turns everyone else on?

Meh
I have an iPhone 3G. When the time came for me to replace my old razor, I was in the market for a smartphone. While I wasn't on an x-year plan, I paid a flat rate for unlimited airtime as long as it was within my city and immediate surrounding area. Since I wanted to stay on that plan, the only smartphone that the carrier was offering was the iPhone, so I took it.

And it's just fine. Reception is good, solid battery life, holds my music so I don't also have to have the old iPod (not a brand whore, just the best of what was available when I was buying an mp3 player four years ago) rattling around in my pocket.

I was pretty sure I wouldn't watch movies on the thing, but I have while riding the train to and from work. I have some useful apps and some games on it to kill time when I've got time to kill. What's the big deal?

It's not a transcendant piece of tat, it's just a useful little toy in a candy package. I don't really care for using Macs, whether at work or at home, but what's the hate all about?

Hate the people who gush about them, don't hate the phone. Remember that these are likely the same people who once thought that something was cutting edge because it had blue LEDs. And you don't hate blue, do you?

If you mean blue the band, I do hate Blue...
Either way, the point is not that they aren't useful little devices, but that I just don't get why people bum them as much as they do. At the end of the day, they are just phones or MP3 players, and other brands do the job just as well, and better, without making the owners look like sycophantic, cult-like twats.

Well yes,
if you're finding a bunch of pompous posturing twits who think that owning a mass produced device makes them special, or people that go on and on about how great their phone is because it does *insert random commonly available feature here*, but I'd hate to think that if someone sees me pull my phone out of my pocket to check my email they think I'm a prick just because of the brand.
