I don't understand the attraction
Smaug says: Ricky Gervais. Lesbian pr0n. Going into a crowded bar, purely because it's crowded. All these things seem to be popular with everybody else, but I just can't work out why. What leaves you cold just as much as it turns everyone else on?

I think it entirely depends upon the game
Deus Ex, my favourite game of all timeā¢, has a completely spurious multiplayer which is to be avoided at all costs. Nobody would consider it an integral part of the experience. Competitive shooters like Counter-Strike or Team Fortress 2 entirely depend on their multiplayer modes, so if you don't want to play against other people, you can ignore them wholesale.
Other titles walk between these two poles. Some have a nice multiplayer that can enhance the experience; you could play Command & Conquer offline and enjoy it thoroughly, or play it online against others, or both. If the single-player is merely a vehicle for multiplayer, though, then we'd probably be better off without it entirely.
