I'm really sure things will work out for you, in the way that things tend to do. But in the mean time, what a lot of stress, uncertainty, and potential loss.

Get yourself an exit plan drawn up (which can be swung into action to avoid debt, jail, or belongings being left behind; thinking about where you might stay on return to the UK etc also adds a bit more security), at the very least to give you and your wife some peace of mind, but lets hope you don't have to actually use it.
