I had a similar experienceLast year, out exloring, we came across a disused railway tunnel - we could dimly see light at the other end and so decided to walk it.
We lost our nerve as soon as we couldn't see the ground under our feet any more, as the imagination starts to fill in all kinds or terrors like sharp blades and bottomless pits.
