I too know this strange experience!My wife is more than prone to waking in the middle of the night and holding what may, at first, appear to be an entirely lucid and reasonable conversation with me... before saying something utterly bizaare thus tipping me off to the fact she is actually still asleep!
e.g.
HER: Oh, you're awake. And in bed.
ME: Erm.. yes, it's 3 am.
HER: Oh good. Is the cat in?
ME: No idea...they've got a cat-flap, remember?
HER: That's fine. It'll be great for flowers and horses tommorow...
ME: Oh, you're asleep aren't you?
HER: Yes. *snore*
