This is a question Have you ever seen a dead body?

How did you feel?
Upset? Traumatised? Relieved? Like poking it with a stick?

I was riding my motorcycle and a guy on another motorcycle heading towards me
had a head-on crash with the car in front of me. The guys neck was ripped open and he died right at my feet. I had to go to the coroners inquest. Nasty.

Was I traumatised? No. Was I upset? No. I honestly felt absolutely calm about the whole thing, which was surprising considering I face the same danger every single day.

*shudders*
I ride too. I think the only way we can is to always be aware of the risks, but not think about what would happen if things go wrong.

Was the other biker riding foolishly? Maybe that would be why you didn't feel something; you can see a cause and effect, that the horrific accident was a result of bad action, not freak of luck that could happen to anyone, such as yourself, you don't feel personal fear for something like it happening to you, because you know you wouldn't ride foolishly like he did.

I know I'd feel horrible for that guy if he wasn't at fault...death came out of the blue...but less so if he caused it.

I think we have to stay calm. Can you imagine getting on your bike if you were actually thinking definitely about the risk you're taking? Gibbering wreck methinks.

We ride safe, and sensibly and do the best we can. Part of that is distancing ourselves from the risks, whilst still being aware of them. A sort of zen state I suppose.
