They didn't call it "LARP" back thenjust "live roleplaying".
I first heard about LRPing in the early 80s, myself. The tabletop gamers tended to think the rubber sword brigade were "a bit dorky" - but in retrospect, at least they tended to be fit and outdoorsy, in comparison.
