Actuallyjust some hot three ring action...
The origin is rather gross. When my dad was pissed (English: mad) with us, he would always claim he had been going to take us kids to the circus, but now we were so naughty he couldn't possibly.
Mr. Dub thought the empty promise/threat was so funny he adopted it as his euphemism. It's very amusing to see dignified silver-haired banker-type Mr. Dub sidle up to me and discreetly inquire, "Would you like to.... gotothecircus?"
