This is a question Family codes and rituals

Freddy Woo writes, "as a child we used to have a 'whoever cuts doesn't choose the slice' rule with cake. It worked brilliantly, but it's left me completely anal about dividing up food - my wife just takes the piss as I ritually compare all the slice sizes."

What codes and rituals does your family have?

Damn those witches!
My Gran did this, my Mum does this and I can't stop myself from doing it.
When you have had your boiled egg you must make sure that you crack a hole in the bottom. This is so "witches can't use them as boats".
I've worked in some rather posh hotels in my time and have found myself forcing guests to do so at breakfast. They've all been very understanding and have done so, but I didn't half weird out a Japanese couple once...

I once read in a book about Cheshire folklore
that the witches would paddle the eggshell boats up the River Dee if you didn't smash them.

I too have heard this
but I have often wondered why it was boiled eggs. Were non boiled egg shells not useful to witches?

I once read a children's book about this...
called Lucy and the Eggwitch or something. She didn't do it and the witch shrunk her. There was a dragon in it too I think. =/

You'd think witches would have better things to do...

Precisely how large are these witches?

Arg
I do that too, even tho I KNOW it's a superstition. I get nervous seeing un-smashed-up eggshells lying around.

I'm teaching my 13 year old son to cook (his idea) and when I told him to smash the eggshells and why, he regarded me with great pity for my senile demetia.
